Laae, the Lady of the Aether
Laae is the goddess of the wind, magic, and to a lesser extent, weather. Her titles are The Lady of the Aether and The Mighty Gale. Laae is a flighty and notably uninvolved goddess, even to her followers. She rarely selects clerics and paladins so her mortal presence within the world is rather miniscule. Of all the gods, Laae is most revered by wizards and other arcane casters as she is the one who created the Aether, the magical wind that is manipulated to cast spells. Before the Aether, you had to have either innate magical abilities, something not common to mortals, or the assistance of a higher power to cast spells. With Laae’s new creation, everyone and their mother could cast magic. Of course the efficacy of the caster required either trained skill or inherent ability through extraplanar lineage. In a few generations, the entire world came under the control of ultra powerful mage rulers. When two nations went to war, the winner wasn’t determined by whoever won the most battles, but by who had the most civilians alive after the first day of war. Spellcasting became so powerful that the strongest casters could ignite the air over an entire city, incinerating everything as far as the eye can see. This led to a uneasy truce between all nations in the world as any attack by anyone could lead to the death of the entire world. After a significant number of prayers started coming into the Astral Court about wards against global annihilation, the court created the Mandate of Wind. The Mandate of Wind limits the rate at which the Aether can blow in any given part of Locutalari at any given time. Through arduous ritual, the Aether can be shifted to be stronger in one place temporarily. When the Aether blows hard in any one place, any arcane spell cast becomes heightened and empowered as per Sorcerer Metamagic rules. This change only lasts at most 10 minutes due to the constraints set by the Mandate of Wind.
